Smart Ways to Boost Milk Supply – The Right Knowledge for Stress‑Free Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is a heartfelt wish for many postpartum mums, yet some worry about not having enough milk. This is especially common among first‑time mothers, who may face challenges such as postpartum fatigue, incorrect feeding methods, low milk supply, or even mastitis. These difficulties can often lead to frustration and, in some cases, giving up on breastfeeding. In fact, with the right techniques and a proper understanding of how to stimulate milk production, breastfeeding can become a much easier and more rewarding experience.
Nicole Chien, nutritionist at Tasteforlife Australia and a proud mum of two, has put together some practical tips to help you easily boost your breast milk supply.
8 Tips to Naturally Boost Milk Supply
- Stay well‑hydrated with soups and fluids
- Maintain a balanced and nutritious diet
- Feed on demand
- Ensure proper latch
- Alternate between both breasts
- Combine direct breastfeeding with pumping
- Relax and massage appropriately
- Include lactogenic foods and teas

Stay well‑hydrated with soups and fluids
Breast milk is made up primarily of water—over 90%—followed by protein, carbohydrates, and fats. To support milk production, it is important to stay well‑hydrated and consume enough protein. Mothers are encouraged to drink at least 2,500 millilitres of fluids daily, which can include nourishing soups or lactation teas to help meet hydration needs.
- Maintain a balanced and nutritious diet
To ensure an adequate milk supply, it’s not only important for your baby to keep stimulating the breasts through frequent nursing, but also for mums to maintain proper nutrition. Aim to increase your daily calorie intake by about 500 calories to support milk production. A balanced diet is essential—along with sufficient fluids, be sure to include more protein and carbohydrate‑rich foods. If calorie intake is too low, it may negatively affect breast milk secretion.
Protein is one of the most important nutrients for producing breast milk. When breastfeeding mothers consistently consume sufficient protein along with a variety of other essential nutrients, their milk supply can continue to flow steadily.

- Feed on demand
Building up a steady milk supply takes time, and frequent pumping helps stimulate the mammary glands to produce more milk. Do not restrict your baby’s nursing duration or frequency—allow your baby to continue feeding until they naturally stop, and offer the breast whenever they show hunger cues. Frequent breastfeeding generally increases milk volume, but avoid feeding too intensively; the interval between feeds should be no less than 2.5 hours. At the same time, ensure that your baby has a proper latch to effectively draw out the milk.
- Ensure proper latch
A proper latch not only ensures that your baby is well‑fed, but also helps draw out breast milk more efficiently.

- Relax and massage appropriately
Many mothers feel anxious about having insufficient breast milk when they first begin breastfeeding. Milk production can be influenced by emotional state and physical condition—stress, mood swings, or lack of sleep may all reduce supply. That’s why breastfeeding mums need to stay relaxed and feed according to their baby’s needs. With a calm mindset and responsive feeding, breast milk will naturally increase over time.
Breast massage can also help increase the flow of breast milk. Gentle kneading stimulates specific acupressure points that promote lactation, thereby accelerating milk secretion.
Include lactogenic foods and teas
Try different lactogenic foods, as every mother’s body responds differently and the effects may vary. However, boosting milk supply still requires frequent pumping or breastfeeding to stimulate production.
